Wandering can occur at any stage of dementia, but the risk may increase as symptoms progress. Dementia is an illness that causes individuals to lose their ability to recognize familiar places and faces. Six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once; many do so repeatedly. Wandering can be dangerous and even life threatening, making the risk abundantly stressful for caregivers.
